Caprock BioFuels, LLC was formed with the vision of advancing clean, renewable bio-fuels and bio-chemicals in Texas. The company's vision also includes revitalizing rural Texas economies, through clean fuel and chemical production, oil seed crop contracts, crushing facilities and local use of these products. The development of a Bio-Refinery facility is underway on a 60 acre tract of land located in Donley County, Texas. This Bio-Refinery facility will be built in several phases, starting with a multi-feedstock, waterless, 5 million gallon/yr methyl ester (Biodiesel) production facility.
A wide variety of oil seed crops can be grown in the region, which already is a large production area for wheat, cotton and peanut crops. Caprock BioFuels, in conjunction with the USDA's National Center for Agricultural Utilization Research, is conducting test growth acreage of an industrial oil seed crop that may become a "dedicated energy crop" in the region. Recently, Caprock BioFuels has signed an agreement with a Texas company to develop the specialty and industrial chemical production facilities, located on the 60 acre Bio-Refinery site, near Clarendon, Texas. During Phase Three development, Caprock BioFuels expects to be generating electric power and process steam at the facility. As the price of crude oil surpassed $41 dollars per barrel, the economics of producing bio-chemicals became viable.
At the turn of the century, most non-petroleum industrial products: dyes, inks, paints, medicines, chemicals, rubber, and plastics were all made from trees, vegetable oils or other crops. By the late 1970's, organic chemicals derived from petroleum had largely replaced those derived from plant materials, capturing more than 95% of the markets previously held by biological resources. The specialty chemical market now exceeds $3-billion dollars and is growing at 15% annually.
Today, many petroleum derived chemical products can be replaced with products made from renewable resources. The possibility exists for development for many new industrial products made from different plant oils. Texas has the most potential of any state for clean fuels and bio-chemical production from biomass. Caprock BioFuels has assembled a highly qualified professional development team ready to exploit the potential of this exciting renewable energy/chemical industry future.
